zedd

Zedd

Sunday September 6th

Zedd started with music in his daily routine from early childhood on. Born Anton Zaslavski, Zedd was raised in Kaiserslautern, Germany by two classically trained musicians, he began playing the piano at the age of four and built up his knowledge of the Classical repertoire throughout his childhood, at times writing a song a day. At age twelve, Anton learned to play the drums and, soon after he began performing with the post-hardcore/metal trio Dioramic. As a preteen he was already composing and producing numerous rock songs in his band's own studio. As the aughts progressed, Anton’s awareness of other genres widened, and in 2009 his interest in producing electronic music was piqued after hearing the French electronic duo Justice. With his gift for musicality and background in instrumentation, composition and production, the move into the realm of electronic dance music was seamless.

Zedd’s stellar development is undoubtedly linked to his unique and highly recognizable style of composition. It stands out in a crowded field as meticulously detailed and carefully produced, very playful and at the same time remarkably catchy despite the complex musicality drafting it up. Drawing from his diverse musical background spanning from classical to post-hardcore/metal to electro house Zedd’s music not only draws from uncommon sources but also has the ability to appeal to an audience outside the realm EDM.

borgore

Borgore

Saturday September 5th

Borgore is one of electronic music’s most popular and polarizing artists. Called the enfant terrible of bass culture and happy to name himself the man who “ruined dubstep,” the LA based, Tel Aviv-born producer’s genre-destroying “gorestep” and maniacal live shows have made him an iconic character in the modern bass scene.

Borgore’s enthusiastic disruption of current electronic music is backed up by sterling musical credentials, proving the old saying that you have to know the rules before you can break them. Formally trained in jazz at Tel Aviv’s Thelma Yellin music academy – Israel’s answer to Juilliard – he was a saxophone prodigy and composed for big band ensembles. The depth of Borgore’s musical knowledge is reflected in his varied influences, which range from Bach and John Coltrane to Aphex Twin and Ella Fitzgerald.

Flyinglotus

Flying Lotus

Saturday September 5th

Experimental electronic music producer Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison, is a grandson of songwriter Marilyn McLeod (the co-writer of Diana Ross' "Love Hangover"), as well as a great-nephew of pianist Alice Coltrane, and therefore a cousin of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. Ellison made beats for the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim network before releasing his debut full-length, 1983, which resembled the work of fellow avant-garde hip-hop producers Madlib, J Dilla, and Ammoncontact on Plug Research in 2006. Following the six-song EP Reset, he released his second full-length, Los Angeles, on Warp in 2008. A three-part series of satellite EPs consisting of remixes and additional productions trailed through the next year. Cosmogramma, his third and most complex album, was issued on the same label in 2010, while the relatively pared-down Until the Quiet Comes followed in 2012. The suite-like You're Dead!, on which he was joined by Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg, and Captain Murphy (Ellison's rapping alias), among others, came two years later. Ellison's considerable quantity of additional production and remix work is scattered across dozens of releases on revered labels such as Tectonic, Hyperdub, Ghostly International, and Ninja Tune -- the last of which is the distributor of his Brainfeeder label, home to releases by the likes of the Gaslamp Killer, Austin Peralta, Martyn, frequent collaborator Thundercat, and Taylor McFerrin.
